Baladi News – Idlib Countryside (Mohammed Khudair)
Assad’s forces have deliberately targeted vital centers and civilian infrastructures in order to exert pressure on the nurturing environment of the Syrian revolution.
The health sector is considered one of the most important and vital sectors, which was damaged the most due to the airstrikes by the Syrian regime and Russian airplanes and helicopters. Last Thursday, the regime helicopters dropped barrel-bombs on the last medical complex in Saraqib of Idlib countryside, causing it to go out of work. The center includes the blood bank, the thalassemia treatment center, and the vaccination center.
Head of the medical complex, Abdallah Hilal, told Baladi News that “the fact that the blood bank, the vaccination center, and the thalassemia treatment center went out of order means that 17 thousand Syrian patients lost any chance for receiving treatment. 15 thousand children used to benefit from the vaccination center alone, meanwhile the thalassemia treatment center used to provide treatment for about 120 patients. Whereas the blood bank used to treat more than 50 regular cases a day, in addition to emergency cases. Unknown fate is awaiting these people because this was the only medical complex in the area.”
Hilal added that, “We are doing all that is possible so that the complex would recover and get back to provide services for the civilians.”
In this context, UN estimated that the medical situation in Syria deteriorated dramatically due to war. Also, WHO warned that a humanitarian crisis would take place if the number of hospitals and health centers continued to decrease, and alerted that the crisis would aggravate if Assad continued targeting medical facilities and forced doctors to leave Syria.
