Young people partying on a beach in the evening sunshine is not typical of the scenes expected to be seen in conflict-ridden Syria.

But crowds of people have been captured dancing on the sand in the coastal city of Latakia.

Topless men and women in colourful clothing can be seen packed together on Wadi Qandeel beach.

Strobe lights are scattered among the swarms of people as they wave their arms wildly in the evening sun.

Earlier in the day, the same people sat in clusters chatting around sun umbrellas and smoking from shisha pipes.

Packs of people were also seen swimming in the sea and soaking up the sunshine.

The destination lies just under 110 miles from Aleppo, which has been under siege for the last two weeks since government forces cut off the only remaining supply route into rebel-held districts.

Government bombardment hit two neighbourhoods of the city where 15 people were killed, including six children, on Thursday.

And on Friday, reports said nearly 40 Syrian soldiers and pro-regime fighters were killed when rebels blew up a tunnel under a government position in the city.

Aleppo has been roughly divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since shortly after fighting began there in mid-2012.

The government advance has raised fears for more than 200,000 people who remain stuck in the east of the city, where food shortages and spiralling prices have already been reported.
