Ali Khamenei appointed a High Commissioner representing him in Syria called "AbolFadel Tabatabaei Ashkazri. His appointment came at a time where the United Nations is supporting Geneva talks between the Syrian opposition and Syrian regime which aim at reaching a political solution. Khamenei's representative appointment also coincided with Iran's mobilization over the past few months of thousands of Iraqi and Afghani militias, leaders of Iranian Revolutionary Guards along with Basij forces to start the grand battle of Aleppo.
Iran has the upper hand in Syria nowadays, after shifting from supporting the regime on military and economic levels to become an occupying force, where Iranian Revolutionary Guards run the battles against Syrian rebels across Syria away from the Syrian army.
It's noteworthy here that Iran has been supporting Syrian regime since the beginning of the peaceful movement against the regime, and has helped in repressing peaceful demonstrations by backing the regime with "Basij" militia. Moreover, It sent several militias followed by "regular" troops to Syria to support its ally "Bashar al-Assad" under the pretext of protecting the shrines of Al al-Bayt initially, but it finally began to acknowledge the killings among its militia in a number of Syrian governorates, particularly in the southern countryside of Aleppo.
