Among 24 photos from 2019 that will “Restore Your Faith in Humanity”, U.S. Buzzfeed website has chosen a photo by Syrian activist and photographer Amer al Hawmi as one of the most expressive images of the past decade.
The photo, which was published by the AFP, shows Syrian children watching a puppet show in the ruins of their collapsed homes in Idlib in March 2019.
Al Hamwi, 24, documented several massacres, including the Ghouta chemical attack, which he left back in 2016 towards Idlib, where he worked with Anatolia Agency until the end of 2017, when he joined as a collaborator with the French press agency.
Al Hawami said he took his winning shot when he was preparing a photo report for the puppet show play titled “The Lazy Sheep” by director Walid Abu Rashid on World Theatre Day. He took several pictures to show the world the reality of children who cling to life despite the destruction surrounding them and despite their uncertain future.
In addition to the one chosen by BuzzFeed as one of the most expressive images of the past decade, al Hamwi said that one of his shots of this play was chosen by The Guardian as one of the best photographs of the week.
