Syrian surgeon Hani Aouira accomplished a new medical achievement after performing a rare surgery on an obese patient in a Swiss hospital. The patient was suffering from excessive obesity, incisional hernia and several other complications, which put his life at risk.
Swiss newspapers and websites, including Tages-Anzeiger, have acclaimed his achievement, referring to him as one of the stars of bariatric and visceral surgery in Europe.
Dr. Aouira, a specialist in visceral surgery, said that the 46-year-old patient had a previous operation in Austria because of a minor illness that required surgery. After the operation, he suffered abdominal infections, adhesions, and an incisional hernia. The patient was a computer programmer, used to sitting constantly on a chair, which led his weight to increase greatly and reach 240 kg.
The operation took place at Hirslanden hospital, one of the most famous Swiss hospitals in Zurich, and it took about 5 hours, demanding a great deal of patience, caution and surgical skill.
The surgeon, originally from Aleppo, confirmed that the patient is now in good health, after three weeks of intensive care, will be moved to the recovery ward and put under a weight loss plan.
