Warplanes hit positions of Iranian forces and allied militias in Albukamal city east of Syria Sunday night.
18 pro-Iran fighters have been killed in the airstrikes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.
It was not clear who carried out the airstrikes, SOHR pointed out, but they likely to be carried out by Israel.
The airstrikes targeted the military base built by Iran on Syria-Iraq borders and several positions of the Iraqi militia "Kataib Hezbollah," local sources reported.
Fox News network revealed photos which confirm that Iran is building a huge military base in the city of Albukamal.
That military base is the first of its kind in the region, and is being established by the IRGC affiliated Failaq al-Quds militias, the network said.
High-rank Iranian officials have approved the building of the base in Albukamal, according to the network.
It's noteworthy that Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria targeting what it says are positions of Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah and Iranian forces, which it has vowed to prevent gaining a foothold on Syrian territory.
