A mass grave was found near the Syrian city of Raqqa where corpses of at least 200 people were buried, a monitoring group reported.
The people are believed to have been executed by Islamic State (IS) between 2014 and 2017 when the jihadist group was in control of the area.
Yasser al-Khamees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were five bodies of middle-aged men in orange jumpsuits. IS usually dressed its victims in orange jumpsuits before being executed, France 24 reported.
"They were shackled and shot in the head," Khamees said, adding that they were believed to have been killed over two years ago.
The grave also included the bodies of three women who were believed to have been stoned to death, Khamees and the Observatory said.
"Their skulls were severely fractured and displayed signs of stoning," the local official added.
He noted that the digging was ongoing and they are expecting as many as 800 bodies to be discovered at the same site.
