The Russian defense ministry said Syrian "militants" rocketed Russia’s Hmeimim airbase near Syria’s coastal city of Latakia twice on Monday.
There were no casualties and no damage at the military base, and air defense forces repelled the attack, the ministry said on its website.
The shelling came from the Idlib de-escalation zone, controlled by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, Maj. Gen. Viktor Kupchishin, said.
The militants used a drone to direct the fire from multiple launch rocket systems, but the attacks were repelled by Hmeimim’s air defense systems, Kupchishin added.
Russian warplanes and Syrian artillery then flattened the positions from which the rockets were launched, Kupchishin claimed.
