Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he will name a new community on the occupied Golan Heights after Donald Trump, as thanks for the U.S. president's decision this year to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the strategic plateau it won in a brief 1967 war with Syria.
Most of the world never acknowledged Israel's formal annexation of the territory in 1981, a trend that Trump broke in March with a signed proclamation. His administration will unveil a broad Middle East peace plan after the the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends this year on June 4.
Netanyahu said he will 'bring to the government a resolution' after the April 19-27 Passover holiday, 'calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump.'
Trump's announcement that the White House would officially acknowledge Israeli control of the Golan Heights came just two weeks before Netanyahu stood for re-election.
