The European Commission added Wednesday, Syria and five other Arab countries to the list of countries that threaten the security of EU because of their negligence with money laundering and terrorism financing.

The Commission said it added countries that has "strategic shortcomings in their AML / CFT regimes, and lack of transparency regarding the real owners of companies and investment funds."

European Commissioner for Justice Vera Girouva said the European Union had strengthened its legislation against money-laundering and the financing of terrorism, so as not to become a safe haven for suspicious funds.

The move was part of a campaign targeting money launderers after several scandals hit European banks in the past few months.

Last month, the EU  added new names and entities linked to Assad regime to the sanctions list, known as the blacklist responsible for crimes against the Syrian people.

It is worth noting that the new sanctions provided for freezing the assets of the people targeted by the sanctions, prohibiting them from entering into the territory of the European Union, and prohibiting dealing with the bodies, companies and individuals included in the sanctions list.
