The Syrian Network for Human Rights said in its new annual report issued on Monday that the Assad regime had dropped at least 2,577,000 barrel bombs in the Syrian opposition held areas since the Russian military intervention on September 30, 2015 until today.

The SNHR said that the first use of barrel bombs was on July 18, 2012 in the city of Dael, north of the Daraa, which caused the death of 5 civilians and injured eight others, while the number of explosive barrels dropped since 2012 till the present time is 70 thousand barrels.

The report revealed that the number of barrel bombs dropped by the regime during 2018 was 3601, pointing out that the rate of dropping barrels during the three years was 23 barrels per day, and that most barrels were dropped on the eastern Ghouta, where the Assad regime had launched a military campaign on 18 February 2018.

The report stresses that the Syrian government has violated Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254, and used barrel bombs in a systematic, widespread manner.
