The Arab League is preparing a resolution that will readmit Syria to the regional bloc, which could be discussed as soon as this month, a diplomatic source from an Arab member state told Sputnik.
"The Arab League is working on a draft resolution to restore Syria’s membership. It might be put up for debate at the Economic and Social Summit in Beirut," the source said.
Lebanon will host the summit on 19-20 January. Its foreign minister has reportedly been lobbying among member states to invite Syria back after its membership was suspended in 2011, but the final decision was put off until the next meeting in Tunisia.
Syria was thrown out of the Arab League in 2011 over its violent response to opposition dissent, a move that failed to stem the bloodshed that spiralled into civil war.
