Responding to a request by US-backed Turkish forces in Manbij, the Syrian army announced it had retaken the town and raised the flag of the regime over some buildings in the city, at a prior invitation of the Kurdish protection units (YPG).
The YPG militia called on the regime of Bashar Assad on Friday to take control of Manbij as the countdown for Turkey's crossborder counterrorism operation is underway.
The group, which Turkey regards as the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist group, said its fighters had previously withdrawn from Manbij to fight Daesh in eastern Syria.
In a statement shared on Twitter, the YPG said it invited the Syrian regime "to send its armed forces to take over these positions and protect Manbij in the face of Turkish threats."
Activists denied the news spread by the Assad regime saying that the regime forces haven't entered the city of Manbij.
