Algeria wants Syria’s Assad invited to Arab League summit in Tunisia

The Algerian authorities are interested in inviting Bashar Al-Assad to attend the Arab League summit scheduled to take place in March next year, a local source said.

According to the source, the Algerian Ambassador to Tunisia Abdelkader Hajjar may exert pressure on Tunisia to invite Assad.

Professor of political sciences at the University of Algiers Abdel Razzaqi said: “Although the Algerian authorities will not play an official role in normalising relations between the Syrian regime and the Arab League due to the almost complete absence of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the return of Syrian-Arab relations serves Algeria’s interests.”

“We must remember that Algeria did not sever its relations with the Syrian regime, and opposed from the beginning foreign interference in the affairs of any country, and its position on the Arab Spring revolutions is known. The Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel visited Damascus,” he added.

In November 2011, Syria was suspended from the Arab League over its failure to end the bloodshed caused by brutal government crackdowns on pro-democracy protests.
