Some 30 Norwegians who went to Syria to take part in hostilities there since 2011 have been killed, while some 30 others are still inside the country, Norwegian newspaper ABC Nahheit said on Monday.
The newspaper quoted Norwegian police as saying that nearly 100 Norwegians had left their country for Syria and joined the terrorist group "Da'ash", according to the Russian news agency Tass.
It explained that 30 Norwegians are still in Syria, pointing out that "their fate seems ambiguous."
"We know very little about who is currently in Syria," said Norwegian police chief Martin Bernsen.
"There are at least 20 children in Syria who have left Norway," he said.
Police reported the return of 40 Norwegians from Syria to their homeland, noting that all returnees, all males, are currently being monitored, while some were imprisoned.
A senior Pentagon official said earlier that after US-backed factions captured a large number of "Daesh" members in Syria, the U.S. wanted foreign fighters to return home for trial.
US officials say there are hundreds of foreign fighters of the Islamic State Organisation captured by the the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria.
