Amnesty International is aiming to recruit 10,000 volunteers to track how many homes and public buildings have been bombed in the Syrian capital of Raqqa in the hopes that they can get closer to discovering how many war crimes have been committed in the area.

The initiative, named Strike Tracker, is asking volunteers to get involved in the month-long project. Each person will be assigned one building at a time to track through satellite imaging to see when it was destroyed. Using Airwars data – an organisation that tracks the devastation through satellites – the human rights group hopes to understand the pattern behind the air strikes.

Volunteers with a mobile phone or laptop can send in footage to be logged in the project. Amnesty International’s Crisis Response Team’s Senior Adviser Milena Marin said that the small city has experienced a disproportionate amount of warfare.

In the summer of 2017, 1,400 civilians killed in the four-month battle that saw the the US-led coalition target jihadi fighters with air power.

Amnesty has previously said that the US government are “in denial” over the amount of civilian casualties they have caused in the country. “With bodies still being recovered from the wreckage and mass graves more than a year later, this is just the tip of the iceberg,” Ms Milena added.
