The Turkish-based Syrian Interim Government and a number of military factions and opposition-affiliated organizations refused to change the flag that represents the Syrian revolution.
The interim government stressed in a statement posted on social media that the revolution’s flag is the one adopted by all its civil and military institutions.
The Syrian revolution’s flag is a national and revolutionary symbol, representing the spirit of revolution and the great sacrifices made by the Syrian people, it said.
“All the forces of the civil and military revolution forces agreed upon this flag, which has become a symbol for them.”
Meanwhile, Syrian activists circulated a statement issued by the founding committee in the areas controlled by opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Idlib, Northern Syria.
The statement called for a new flag in Northern Syria that resembles the Syrian revolution flag.
It said that the new flag is made up of four colors, green on top, white in the center with the phrase “La ilaha illa Allah Muhammad Rasul Allah (There is no god but Allah. Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah)” in red and black on the bottom.
Most of the activists on social media expressed their refusal to change the Syrian revolution flag, recalling how they carried it during demonstrations demanding the overthrow of the Syrian regime.
"This decision is (Islamization) of the Syrian revolution and drags it into dependence on the Islamic factions,” said military commander of the Idlib Free Army.
