The Russian military in Syria has shot down another drone near its Hmeimim air base. The drone was reportedly launched from the militant-controlled de-escalation zone in Idlib, the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria said in a statement on the Russian Defense Ministry’s website.

The report states that it was a strike drone, and belonged to the rebels. It was shot down by an anti-air weapon at a safe distance from the Russian air base. No one was injured in the incident, nor was there any material damage. The air base is operating as normal.

“The Russian Center for Reconciliation urges the commanders of the armed groups to desist from armed provocations and to embark on the path to the resolution of the situation in the regions they control,” the Russian military stated.

The Russian military periodically reports that it has shot down militant drones close to its bases. On Friday August 10, it claimed to have shot down two drones close to the Khmeimim air base. The Center for Reconciliation said that the drones had been launched from Lattakia. In this case too, no damage was caused.

At the end of July, Russian Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said that the Russian military repelled 26 drone attacks in July. The Russian air base in Khmeimim is equipped with two divisions of S-400 “Triumph” long-range anti-air defense systems and Pantsir-S missile launcher systems.
