Reuters published a report, today Tuesday, talks about a preparatory shelling of the regime's side before an offensive on the last rebel stronghold in Damascus, according to a commander in the pro-government alliance.
Recovering the Yarmouk camp and neighboring areas located south of the city would give President Bashar al-Assad complete control over Syria’s capital, further consolidating his grip on power, says Reuters.
Yarmouk is a Palestinian refugees camp, which is the biggest in Syria since 1957. It was a shelter for thousands of people who fled the clashes between the opposition factions and the regime forces. After witnessing intense fighting between different factions, the Yarmouk in 2015 was controlled by the Islamic State.
Although the vast majority of residents have fled, the United Nations says thousands remain.
