Under the hashtag “#1950_Constitution_Represents_Me,” Syrian activists started a campaign to support readopting the Syrian constitution of 1950 in order to express their refusal of the international and Russian attempts to impose a new constitution favouring Assad and consolidating his hegemony over the country.
In a statement, the activists said, “the constitution has been suspended under the state of emergency, which has not been canceled until this day, not to mention what the war criminal Bashar al-Assad has committed since 2011.”
"The Constitution of 1950 is a unique social contract in constitutional life, which was created by the will of the Syrians. It came in response to their needs and aspirations for a decent life. It has been in fact the legitimate social contract until the moment apart from what the authoritarian rule of Hafez al-Assad and his heir has consolidated,” the statement said.
The statement called upon “the revolution’s youth inside and outside Syria, all the political, civilian, and military foundations of the revolution, and all those who stand with the Syrian revolution to adopt the constitution of the year 1950 as a reference by all available means.
