Baladi News – Hama (Shahhoud Jaddou’)
A source in Hama prison reported that the prisoners staged a mutiny and demonstrations against the prison director, Hama governor, and Hama province police chief.
The mutiny took place after the prisoners held a sit-in in front of one of the prison gates to demand the governor and the police chief to fulfill precious promises to release prisoners of conscience that they reneged on.
The source stated that the security and anti-riot police threw tear grenades at the sitters, which caused suffocation among them and increased the tension, which turned the sit-in into demonstrations.
The source called upon international organizations to examine the cases of arbitrarily detained people who have been in the prisoners for five years without prosecution or allowing their families to visit them or know their fate.
According to unconfirmed news from inside the prison, Russian officers may visit the prison to study the demands of the prisoners and detainees.
It is noteworthy that Hama prison witnessed two years ago a mutiny that ended with promises to release hundreds of prisoners in batches. However, after fulfilling some stages of the agreement, the police leadership reversed its decisions.
Hama prison includes more than 600 prisoners of conscience who were brought from security branches without prosecution or allowing them to hire attorneys to pursue their release.
