Russian media sources revealed that scenarios are being deliberated at decision-making circles in Moscow to increase the support of Assad’s forces against the US attacks, indicating that such “scenarios” enjoy broad support within the Russian parliament.
The scenarios are part of plans being set by Moscow to stop or face the US expansion and repeated strikes against Assad’s forces in the Syrian Desert and Raqqa province, which prevents the establishment of the Iranian corridor from Tehran to the Beirut Southern Suburb through the Syrian Desert.
Syrian journalist Eyad Issa said, “These scenarios are an attempt to maintain the image of Putin, made by Russian media and reinforced by Obama’s lack of action, as the invincible president who will restore the prestige of Russia.”
However, Issa ruled out the possibility of any response by Assad’s army to the US strikes “because in this case Washington would strike back twice as hard.” He added that “Moscow will not supply Assad’s army with weapons that could cause a serious threat to the US army because this would provoke and lead Trump’s administration to provide the Syrian opposition’s factions with shoulder-launched antiaircraft missiles, which Putin never wishes for.
Regarding the Russian attitude in Syria, the journalist indicated that Russia’s clinging to Assad has become so clear that any deal to remove him must be concluded within the framework of US-Russian understandings regarding several hot issues in the world, and most importantly the Ukrainian question, which will never take place in the short term due to collusion of Trump with Russia during the US presidential elections.
The history of Bashar al-Assad's regime with Israeli attacks suggests that it will just make some ado and utter the often-repeated statement of maintain the right of retaliation even if the "enemy" war planes fly over Assad’s palace.
