Iran threatened that it would perform the biggest air operation against ISIS since the Iraqi war, when the Iranian forces were defeated so badly that its supreme leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, compared it to “swallowing poison.”
The Iranian defeat three decades ago caused the delay of its expansion project that aims at dismembering the area and replacing the Turkmen and Sunnite by Shiites from the unknown lands of Iran and Afghanistan in order to create an obedient atmosphere that would accept foreign occupations.
However, the Iranian idea could be literally classified as a political comedy for several reasons. First of all, Iran is short of technically-qualified warplanes to perform large-scale military operations in Syria. Since the Iranian-Iraqi war, Iran has not renewed its war jets due to the international sanctions, which makes a big response to the attacks against the mausoleum of Khomeini and the Iranian parliament impossible.
The technical deficiencies of the Iranian warplanes would exhaust them if they fly distances ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 km. Only few war jets would be capable of achieving this task, which would reduce the number of warplanes to be used in such a military action to dozens rather than hundreds.
A solution to this problem is performing the strikes from the airports of Assad’s regime, which would not be possible without the approval of both the United States and Russia.
