The G7 meetings, held over two days in Italy, was concluded on Saturday with the Syrian case having been strongly present in the agenda.
Whereas the great powers insisted on the importance of supporting the efforts of fighting terrorism in Syria, represented by ISIS and al-Nusra Front, Assad’s regime was not mentioned as a war criminal and main supporter of terrorism. In the contrary, the final statement appeared as if it had been entreating Russia and Iran to intercede with Assad to solve the Syrian crisis.
This attitude comes despite the massive American escalation against Assad and Iran, which was translated into direct strikes against Assad and his allies in more than one occasion.
Syrian journalist Eyad Issa considered that the meeting cannot be relied upon to achieve a breakthrough in the Syrian case, because “the international attitude talks about the political solution as the only way out.”
The speaker revealed that “the stances of the G7 group, the Friends of Syria, and the regional states, all await the developments in the American attitude and how far the United States can go in counteracting the Iranian ambitions in Syria.
Issa clarified that any actual change in the stance of Washington under Trump’s administration would be followed by a radical change in the stances of the European states as well as some Arab ones that are still indecisive until the military solution is prioritized.
