Greek police prevent hundreds of refugees from crossing borders

BALADI NEWS

Greek border guards prevented hundreds of migrants, on Friday, from entering Greece, hours after Ankara announced that it would not prevent them from crossing into Europe, Greek police say.

The Greek Chief of Staff together with the Minister of Police headed to the borders to watch the situation, while the government said that alert on the borders was raised to the highest level.

Greek officials said that the government has strengthened the monitoring procedures on the sea and land borders, and this comes after the bloody development which took place in Syria's Idlib on Thursday, where more than 33 Turkish soldiers were killed by Assad airstrikes in Idlib.
Omer Gelik, the spokesperson of the Justice and Development Party AKP, said that Ankara will no longer prevent Syrian refugees from reaching into Europe, in response to the death of 33 Turkish soldiers in Syria by Assad regime forces.
Meanwhile, footage posted by Anadolu Agency went viral, showing dozens of migrants flocking to Edirne in Turkey, heading to the bordering villages to reach EU territories.
Greece is in contact with the EU and NATO in this regard, sources say.
It's noteworthy that Greece was the main gateway for hundreds of thousands of refugees who flocked from Turkey to EU in mass exoduses in 2015 and 2016, until an agreement reached with the European Union to halt this flow.
