Local activists and medics called on international health organizations to interfere to halt the spread of Leishmaniasis disease that has been sweeping the Kurdish-held areas in eastern Deir Ezzor province.

So far, 8000 cases have been reported among the residents of Eastern Euphrates Rives region, mostly children.

Local news site Furat Post (Euphrates Post) said the ‘intracellular protozoan parasite’ has spread in the eastern countryside of the oil-rich province due to mounting poverty and lack of aid.

Local governing councils are not able to defeat the disease due to the lack vaccines and medicine.

The health sector called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide hospitals and clinics with the vaccine.

Leishmaniasis can present in three main ways: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, or visceral leishmaniasis.
