1,089 civilians have been killed in Syria’s northwestern city of Idlib over the past four months, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet said Wednesday.
Bachelet said that her office had managed to identify 570 men, 213 women and 304 children who were killed during the period from 29 April – 29 August.
She added that the killings were resulting from the airstrikes and ground-based attacks, which were carried out by the Syrian regime and its allies.
“I should not need to emphasize that these figures are appalling, shameful and deeply tragic,” Bachelet said.
The UN official called on all the conflict parties “to put aside political differences and hold the carnage.”
In May, 2017, the guarantor states, Russia, Turkey and Iran announced Idlib a de-escalation zone, and this agreement came within the Astana meetings in Kazakhstan.
Despite the de-escalation agreement and the Sochi deal between Russia and Turkey which stressed on the necessity of implementing the de-escalation agreement, Assad forces and their Russian and Iranian allies launched a military campaign against the area in late April, killing more than 1000 civilians and forcing more than 700,000 to flee their homes towards the Turkish borders.
