Fresh satellite images showed that the construction is underway near Damascus to dig a tunnel next to the new palace of Maher al-Assad, Bashar’s brother and the powerful military man, Zaman Al-Wasl newspaper wrote.
The tunnel construction is under the supervision of North Korean experts, the newspaper said according to its sources.
Dozens of heavy mechanical machines and bulldozers were seen entering the tunnel over the past months, it added.
Maher al-Assad is the commander of the army's elite Fourth Armored Division that committed war crimes against the Syrian people since the revolution erupted in March 2011.
According to the newspaper, the height of the entrance of the tunnel is 1,100 meters, while the height of the hill on which the palace is located is 1133 ie, the thickness of the rocks over the tunnel is 35 meters of hard rock, and the entrance of the tunnel is also covered with armed concrete to protect it.
The old palace of Maher al-Assad includes a similar tunnel. It was also built with expertise from North Korea.
