Syrian rescue worker’s heroic last moments as he’s killed in airstrike while trying to save woman

Orient Net - Mirror

A humanitarian rescue worker runs into the aftermath of an airstrike in Syria, trying to dig a woman out from the rubble - moments before he’s killed by a drone.

Mohammad Walid Al Ghourani, a volunteer with the White Helmets civil defense group, died after being struck by the flying machine yesterday.

He was one of at least 23 people, including four children, killed in the airstrikes, which were carried out just east of Syria’s capital of Damscus.

Video footage captured on a fellow White Helmet member’s headcam shows Al Ghiourani’s final moments before the camera cuts out as another missile hits.

The film shows the brave volunteer sprinting into the smoking remains of a school and hospital that were hit by missiles in the town of Deir al-Assafir.

As screaming children flee the devastation, Al Ghourani sprints over the rubble and headlong into the smoke-filled area.

The camera goes dead just as the group reach a woman trapped in the rubble.

Yesterday’s airstrike was one of the deadliest civilian incidents since a partial ceasefire was agreed between the US and Russia last month.

The White Helmets are a group of neutral, unarmed volunteers who rush into the aftermath of deadly explosions in Syria to rescue survivors.

They estimate to have saved more than 40,000 lives.
